Entrepreneurship by Design
MARWAR India|November-December 2016

Rajasthan has had a strong influence on Nivedita Saboo’s voyage into the world of fashion. From the state’s signature motifs to its heritage textiles, her collections include elements that celebrate the local culture. The designer offers a first-hand account of her journey.

Entrepreneurship by Design

My deep-rooted affinity and love for Rajasthan began when I was a student at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), New Delhi. Intrigued and fascinated by the state’s textile heritage, age-old intricate techniques and various facets of design, I found myself drawn to its magnificence. This, at a subconscious level, is the cornerstone of all my designs.

Marrying into a Marwari family led to a new journey, one that vividly represents my love for Rajasthani culture, its spellbinding traditions and everyday nuances. These are a strong part of the Nivedita Saboo Couture legacy.

A creative connection

It has always been my endeavour to bring to the fore elaborate Rajasthani techniques by imbibing them into my collections. From having an inhouse block-printing unit and showcasing the most celebrated signature motifs to using techniques such as leheriya and bandhej and working with skilled and award-winning dyers and printers from the state, I celebrate the Marwari culture through my designs and creations. This year, I’m also looking forward to showcasing my designs at the Rajasthan Heritage Week in December.
