Quick-fire questions

How to clean my Apple Magic Keyboard thoroughly?

> It’s wise to combine this with disinfection. Apple recommends two types: sparing use of a disinfectant containing mild bleach, or better 70% isopropyl alcohol which won’t damage electronics. Leave it in a light, open area for a day or two afterwards to ensure virus destruction.

How to fix a Trackpad which discharges in minutes?

> Turn it off using the switch at the back. Leave it a minute, then turn the switch back on. Put it on charge using its USB cable and leave it to reach 100%, checking that twice in the Bluetooth menu item to get an accurate reading. If it still doesn’t hold its charge, it needs to be replaced.

You don’t need an expensive UPS

Q How can I protect my new iMac from blackouts in our mains power supply?

by TERRY MITCHELL

A Every desktop Mac should be provided with mains power delivered through an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). That not only filters out potentially damaging spikes but lets your Mac shut down in an orderly fashion when the power fails altogether. Laptop Macs will still benefit when connected to a filtered supply, but automatically switch to their own battery power, so don’t need backup from a UPS.
