BODO ACCORD: A RAY OF HOPE OR ROAD TO CONFLICTING FUTURE
The Ministry of Home Affairs, Assam government and Bodo groups including the All Bodo Students’ Union and militant outfits signed an agreement on January 27, this year. This is New Delhi’s third attempt at conflict resolution after the 1993 and 2003 accords with the Bodos. The new deal offers more hope than the earlier accords as National Democratic Front of Boroland that had stayed away from earlier agreements are now on board. Soleimani was assassinated in a US drone strike on the orders of US President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, the Middle Eastern country has raised the blood-red ‘flags of revenge’, vowing to retaliate the death of the General. Iran responded back to the killing of the General by launching missiles on 8th January at Iraqi bases used by the US military. The escalating tension between the two countries have heightened fears of a conflict with far-reaching implications.

RAPE WITH MURDER CASES UPSURGES IN ASSAM: NCRB
The Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary in a written reply to a query by AGP MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita said that 6,528 rape cases have been registered in Assam, between April 2016 and October 2019. The minister on behalf of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who holds the Home portfolio, informed the state assembly in November 2019, that in Guwahati alone 248 cases were registered. Assam which was once regarded as a safe haven for women is now considered to be the most unsafe region. As corroborated by the data revealed by the National Crime Records Bureau NCRB, a shocking revelation came when Assam topped the rape with murder cases of women in the country.

AMIDST CAA PROTESTS, BJP EYES CHAKMAS TO KEEP ITS HOLD IN MIZORAM
In a recent turn of events, villagers belonging to the Chakma community were forcibly evicted from Kamalabagan, a village situated near Demagiri (Tlabung) in Lunglei District of Mizoram on 11th December 2019 by officials of state machinery at the behest of non-state entities. Seeking the Governor’s intervention, various members from the community wrote a stringent letter to contain the injustice meted out to the Chakma minorities. The ethnic tension between the Mizo and Chakma communities has been a long one. Though, the stand-off between the two communities has emerged on the basis of indigeneity.
