£5.5M AFTER BEING STABBED IN PRISON

A PERSISTENT criminal who was stabbed in jail has been handed a £5.5million compensation payout after suing the government.

Burglar Steven Wilson, 36, had next to no history of having earned an honest penny in his life when he was remanded to HMP Chelmsford in 2018.

He was stabbed with a nine-inch knife by convicted murderer Patrick Chandler in the prison kitchen.

Wilson suffered a torn liver, fractured spine and lacerated spinal cord, and was left with a fear of knives and kitchens.

The Ministry of Justice admitted liability for allowing Chandler to work in the kitchen with access to sharp items.
