TWELVE migrants are confirmed to have died in a small boat Channel catastrophe, with two missing.

A pregnant woman and six children are reported to be among the dead.

The boat left Le Portel, near Boulogne in northern France early yesterday, and is thought to have been overloaded with 60-70 people.

French emergency services said many survivors were found in a state of cardiac arrest, suggesting they had been subjected to a human crush in the craft. Many were in a critical condition.

The boat's occupants had used mobile phones to call for help at 6.30am yesterday but by the time rescuers arrived they were all in the sea.
