KAMALA Harris is leading Donald Trump in the polls after securing the Democratic presidential nomination.
The former California senator, 59, officially became the first woman of colour to lead a major party ticket after the Democrats announced that 99% of delegates – some 4,600 – had voted for her during a five-day ballot.
Election analyst Nate Silver’s national poll aggregate now shows her leading Republican nominee Trump at 45.5% to 44.1%.
When President Joe Biden withdrew from the contest on July 21, Trump had a 45.2% to 41.2% lead.
HOPEFUL
But Harris has electrified the Democratic base and rattled her rival, who sparked a backlash for targeting her over her race, her intelligence and her laugh.
Yesterday, Harris named her running mate as 60-year-old Minnesota Governor Tim Walz – a former teacher and member of the US Army National Guard.
