THE National Grid’s HQ was “lit up like a Christmas tree” while millions of Brits were obeying its cut-your-power plea.

Electricity chiefs had called on customers with smart meters to reduce their usage from 5pm to 6pm on Monday and Tuesday in a bid to ease predicted pressure on creaking supplies.

But while families across the nation stopped making tea, cooking, ironing, or putting on washing machines, lured by cash paybacks, the National Grid offices in Warwick were at full beam.
