Scientists say the "unexpected interaction" has never been seen before in the solar system and could help predict if planets around other stars have ring systems.
It is most likely caused by icy ring particles raining down on to Saturn's atmosphere, Nasa said, which is heating the giant planet's upper atmosphere.
A spokesman said: "It took a veteran astronomer to pull it together using observations from the Hubble telescope, Cassini probe, Voyager 1 and 2 and the International Ultraviolet Explorer mission."
