HOW LONG UNTIL I RECOVER?

Q I injured my knee in a road traffic accident 20 years ago. I was told at the time that I may develop arthritis in that joint as a result and, sadly, that has happened. The pain keeps me awake at night and restricts day-to-day life. I am considering replacement surgery. How long will it take to recover after the operation?

A Most people will stay in hospital for two or three days after knee replacement surgery. You will be given an exercise programme and it is important you do this. You will be advised not to drive for six weeks, and you should be able to return to work between six and 12 weeks post op, depending on the type of work you do.
