WHY GO?
Spring is the best time to sightsee without the crowds of summer. It’s balmy enough to sip cocktails on a terrace or linger at pavement cafes under jacaranda blossom.
RAMBLE ON
Sprawled over seven hills and lapped by the Tagus River, Lisbon is a glorious sight in spring, when ivory church domes and lemon- and pink-painted houses pop against azure skies. Its small size means you can reach most attractions on foot, while funiculars and lifts ferry you up the steepest inclines.
Once up high, savour city-sweeping views from a miradouro, a terrace usually with a kiosk serving snacks and drinks, like Sagres beer or Ginjinha, a Portuguese cherry liqueur.
For longer trips, ride on a vintage tram with wooden bench seats. Pick up a Lisbon card (€21 for 24 hrs) for free transport and free/discounted museums, and get to know the neighbourhoods. Start at São Jorge Castle, the Moorish stronghold crowning the medieval Alfama district, then head to BaixaChiado for shops and restaurants.
