'I couldn’t stop smiling’
Donna McCaulsky, 49, lives in south London.
My weight had been a problem for as long as I could remember. As a child I’d eat hearty meals, go for seconds and would always find room for dessert. It meant that by the time I was 18, I was a size 18 and, after heading to university, I continued with the same habits – no portion control and eating calorie-ridden desserts most nights too.
Later, with a busy job in the civil service, I’d grab unhealthy food on the go. In my mid-20s, I was a size 22 and at 5ft 4in I was overweight. But I was so career-driven, I didn’t prioritise my health. ‘I’m too busy to think about my diet,’ I convinced myself over the years.
WAKE-UP CALL
But in 2022, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition and prescribed steroids, which really made my weight rocket. I hit a size 30 and my lower back was in constant pain. When walking became a struggle by May 2023, it was a massive wake-up call.
I signed up to The 1:1 Diet and at my first meeting with my consultant Deborah I weighed 25st 3lb. Deborah designed a plan, a combination of meal replacements and fresh food. I was amazed to lose a stone in the first two weeks. Boosted, I persevered and started daring to wear brighter, more fitted clothes as the weight came off.
