There’s nothing quite like the first experience of love – the intensity, the passion, the naivety and, in most cases, the heartbreak. It’s true what they say, that the first cut is the deepest, but there’s a reason for that and, in my case, I learnt pain that came with our split.

I met Adam* at university in 1993. A DJ, he grew up in Somerset just like me and was also into the secret raves I loved going to. We spent all of our spare time together. He wasn’t the first man I slept with, but he was the first one it meant anything with. Our relationship was intense and I was convinced that Adam and I would be together forever. But, like a lot of young relationships, it didn’t last.
