As a place of commerce, Hong Kong has long learned to negotiate the different communities, races and interests that dwell permanently or temporarily on its shores as long as they donât interfere too much with each other. But that way of functioning, where each interest group remains an island, clashes, in the art world at least, with the ambition or necessity for Hong Kong to show some leadership in the arts, to be more than a mere place of transactions. The recent disagreements about the future of the M+ museum and the kind of collections it should carry illustrates the current lack of vision
