Safety is of utmost concern to all of us in the maritime industry, and this took on an added dimension with the arrival of the Coronavirus Disease 2019. The feature article examines how technology can empower safety, while Port & Starboard delves into how artificial intelligence and big data can improve safety and efficiency in the seas. Interviews with Ms Sandra Welch, former Chief Operating Officer of Sailors’ Society; and Mr Abhishek Chawla, the Head of Operations at CMA CGM Asia and Chief Operations Officer at APL further underscore the importance of safety. Entrepreneurs took the limelight in Technology, where the winners of the Smart Port Challenge 2019 were featured. Capt Peng Chu Xing from Pacific International Lines shares the company’s safety-first culture, while industry experts give their take on IMO 2020 Fuel Oil Sulphur Limit in Community Talk.

This edition of Singapore Nautilus looks at the issue of gender diversity in Maritime Singapore and the important role that women play. Singapore commemorates its bicentennial in 2019, and this issue focuses on the nation’s maritime journey from the past to the present, with an eye to the future. The feature story highlights Singapore’s development from a trading post in the 14th century to a global maritime hub, as well as efforts by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore to help Singapore remain a leading and vital node in the global maritime network. In keeping with the theme, the Commentary section saw David Chin, former Executive Director of the Singapore Maritime Foundation sharing three areas of the maritime industry that have seen significant improvements through the years. And Masafumi Kuroki, Executive Director of the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre (ISC) emphasises the need for multilateral sharing of information to combat piracy and sea robbery.

This issue of SIngapore Nautilus spotlights key developments within the bunkering industry. As the world's top bunkering port, Singapore has always taken the lead in improving standards within the industry.
