The Perfect Companion

Robert Lynex, Area Secretary of the 0701 Cornwall MG Owners Club, has enjoyed a variety of MGs over the years, but it is this 1968 MGC that has really stolen his heart.

The Perfect Companion

I’ve had MGs since 1976, and been in the MG Owners Club since 1979. In the early years I had mostly MGBs while my then wife-to-be owned an MG Midget, because that was what most people had in the MGOC back then.

I was the Area Secretary for Birmingham in the 1980s, and since moving down to Cornwall in 1991, I’ve been heavily involved with the Cornwall MGOC. Being retired, a lot of my time is taken up running the club. I decided early on that the problem with motor clubs in general is that they tend to be very cliquey. We didn’t want that, but since we don’t have any membership I fees, that in turn means we don’t have any Committee or Treasurer, it is just a group of 50-60 friends. We have a monthly club night and a monthly brunch, and we get 30-35 people regularly turn up for each. It is basically a social club where the common denominator between members is provided by MG cars.

We try very hard to get modern MGs into our club down here. I do have a 2003 MG TF as my everyday car now and love it to bits, but when the F first came out I tried one and thought it was rubbish – I couldn’t get my elbow on the door capping, and you couldn’t hear the engine. I remember thinking at the time that you couldn’t have an MG and not hear the engine!
