Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the 'Saint of the Gutters' was born on August 26, 1910 in Skopje, Macedonia (formerly Yugoslavia). Her original name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.
From a very young age she had a deep commitment to charity and wanted to be a missionary, serve the poor and spread the love of Christ. Thus, at the age of 18, she joined a community of nuns.
She came to India in January 1929, became a teacher at the St. Mary's High School in Calcutta and upon attaining her final vows in May 1937, was called Sister Teresa. In 1944, she became the school's principal. Even then, she was well noted for her charity, selflessness and organization skills.
