A Brazilian who is a vegetarian convert, you must have shocked people, when and how did that happen?

Absolutely. Coming from a country where beef is staple diet! But to be honest, there is no spiritual philosophy behind it. When I was 19, my body just chose to go vegetarian. It started with me getting put off by the smell, I avoided going to that part of the market where beef was sold. Soon I was eating just vegetables.

Was it easy, decades ago, to be vegetarian in Brazil?

No, it wasn't. There were hardly any eating places that served veg food then, now it is easier. Yet, in all these years I never went back to eating meats. Though I can eat fish, sometimes.

You are very particular about what you eat, meaning?
