From humble beginnings dating back to 1920 where Filippo Della Valle handmade footwear in his basement to housing their headquarters in an ultra sleek and modern set of glass and gleaming Italian travertine marble buildings spanning over 170,000 square meters, Tod’s has evolved into an Italian institution synonymous with unrivalled comfort and craftsmanship. We paid a visit to their manufacturing unit just a little outside of Rome, where the iconic ‘Gommino’ driving shoe is handmade. Characterised by the rubber pebble studs running along the sole and heel, the classic is known for its soft one-piece construction. Creating the the ‘Gommino’ involves over 100 steps in the process, including 35 pieces of leather in a single model, each of which needs to be individually treated and checked by hand before being assembled.
