As per an excise official, the collections so far had been ₹15,090 crores which was quite impressive considering that bars, liquor shops and restaurants were closed for eight months, disrupting off-take. Maharashtra had collected ₹15,323 crores in 2018-19 fiscal. In 2019-20, the government collected ₹17,477 crores as per the excise department.
The lockdown prompted by Covid19 and the second wave of the pandemic has torpedoed resource mobilisation by the government. Since there was reduced off-take, most of the manufacturers did not fully utilise their installed capacities, thus affecting excise revenue.
