Big Blue, Tall Green - Conversations On Coral Reefs And Tropical Forests
Migrants to the Andaman Islands, Chetana Purushotham and Krishna Anujan find themselves enamoured by the deep, lush wilderness of these islands and the water that surrounds them. Respectively a marine ecologist and tropical biologist, they banter on the incorruptible link between life underwater and on land.
The Anthropocene River
It was late February and silk cotton trees, bereft of leaves, were blooming a bright red in Assam. I stood on the banks of the Brahmaputra. There was no water in it, only sand. Dry season flows meant that the river had receded to only a few channels.
The Descent of Man
At the best of times, the striped hyaena Hyaena hyaena, gets a raw deal from humans. Unfairly accused of being a child lifter, this extraordinary scavenger is an omnivore. An arid zone dweller, it has been persecuted by generations of humans fed on fanciful tales of its imagined viciousness. Not by any stretch of imagination a ‘pretty’ creature, its sloping back, powerful jaws and peculiar gait lead people to easily believe the worst about the animal.

Life Beyond 'The Research'!
I am no experienced researcher, nor am I a seasoned professional. I am at the most a passionate naturalist, attempting to perform a certain activity the scientific community tags as research. This is what I have learned...
Photography As Art
Across the world fine art is taking huge strides towards the goal of stimulating and influencing public opinion in favour of nature conservation. Shaaz Jung, a talented young Indian wildlife photographer, is a pioneer in this field, and he uses his wildlife photographs, enhanced by digital imagery, to augment their impact. In his view, this will bring in new pools of support from artists whose creativity could help turn the tide, by attracting hitherto untapped potential for the critical task of saving our vanishing wilds.

Pheasants of Bhutan
The iridescent breasts, feathered crests, colourful, velvety feathers, shimmering eyes – male pheasants entice not just the females, usually dressed in muted greys and browns, but also humans who have embarked on expeditions to capture them for the pot, fashion and now photography.

A Sweet New Song!
Deciding whether two animals are the same or a different species frequently leads to debates among scientists. In Rote Island, Indonesia, researchers tried to find the differences between many pairs of closely related birds by simply asking the birds!
