The Elizabeth Line fleet will be sold and leased back to raise finance for replacement Piccadilly Line trains.
TRANSPORT for London is to sell and lease back the Class 345 Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) fleet to fund ‘New Tube for London’ trains for the Piccadilly Line.
TfL has been under increasing pressure to find new funding approaches following a reduction in Government subsidy and a levelling off in fares growth. Leasing trains is a standard approach for main line train operating companies, including London Overground, and the scheme should raise the £875 million needed for the Underground trains. The contract should be awarded before the summer.
