ICONIC BODYCON
A moment that will forever be etched into our brains: Bella Hadid on the Coperni Spring/ Summer 2023 runway, having a dress spraypainted onto her body. Partners in design and life, Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant put on the show at the Salle des Textiles at the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris. Described as a "celebration of women's silhouettes from previous centuries", their creation was made possible by an innovative material called Fabrican. The viral moment took many back to Alexander McQueen's Spring 1999 showcase, where a white dress, donned by model Shalom Harlow, was spray-painted in chaotic graffiti-esque streaks of black and yellow by robots.
Almost a quarter of a century later, spectators were awed by what can be achieved at the intersection of fashion and technology.
DARE TO BARE
As we finally resumed hard-partying weekend plans this year, the desire to supercharge sex appeal came naturally. The cut-out trend has carried over particularly well from last year. Euphoria's Maddy Perez, played by Alexa Demie, inspired many to push their sartorial envelope and bare some skin with her memorable black dress from the first episode of the popular show's second season. On the Fall/Winter 2022 runways, we saw designers like Nensi Dojaka, AMBUSH, and Supriya Lele went a step further with cut-outs and experimented with draping, embellishments and more. They gave us many renditions of the trend, proving that the sheer variety of placement and size options makes the design element supremely adaptable.
From breathtakingly risqué to relatively modest, there was a cut-out cut out for everyone.
