On 23rd June, we discussed 'The Four Purusharthas' at Couples Class with Shri Ashok Joshiji, M.Com and SAP coach (Systems Applications and Products in Data Processing).
It was surprising that a person with a background of commerce and computers had vast knowledge of Indian scriptures. Joshiji, after having successfully completed the Brahmachari and Grahasth Ashrama and now into Vaanaprastha Ashram at 60+, realized that his house, which is the body, and all his material possessions are not really his. So, to know more about the purpose of life, the heavenly abode, and how to obtain salvation became his new quest in life. He took up extensive study of Sanatana Dharma, the 200 Upanishads, Shrimad Bhagavatam and the Bhagavad Gita. He also did an in-depth study of human nature under the able tutoring of his grandfather. Hence, he seemed to be the ideal person to speak on the four Purusharthas or the goals of human life, Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha.
Hindus believe that these goals provide opportunities to act morally and ethically, and are aids to a morally good life. They also believe that people need to find a balance between all four goals. For example, people should seek Artha and Kama in accordance with the principles of Dharma, and take time to reflect and enjoy the little things in life to practice Kama.
