The Design Game

Through his latest collection, King’s Gambit, the designer Patrick Coard who moved from Paris to Manila with his entire family, expressed his feeling of “being truly at home in my life right now”.

He launched his King’s Gambit with Kaye Tinga at W17 last May 16, 2023. “Each sculpture explores new ambitious scales, different ethereal qualities and constantly pushes boundaries,” he explained.

Upon entering the atelier, Coard’s first creation, the Oval Queen, welcomed guests. The designer planned every nook and cranny of this place with all things positioned strategically. The Oval Queen overlooks her “children”—Prometheus, Birds Eye, and the Tower— three of his other works in the collection. In the atrium, the evolution of this family is much more visible as scales increase and shapes mature into new designs.
