The travel and tourism industry is believed to have received a boost in the current budget. The Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, releasing the budget 2023, stated that being aware of the potential of the sector in creating jobs and opportunities for the youth, promotion of tourism would be taken up in mission mode.
She revealed that, to boost the sector, 50 tourist destinations would be chosen through a challenge to be developed into a whole package for domestic and international tourism. For domestic tourism “Dekho Apna Desh” has already been promoted very widely now similarly international tourism too will be revived with these initiates. The tourist infrastructure will also be provided on the border and in North East India which will be highly beneficial for the inflow of tourists. The finance minister spoke about enhancing opportunities for private investment in infrastructure. She revealed that initiatives would also be taken to set up tourism in villages adjacent to the border.
Budget shows that the mood of the government to allocate resources for the development of tourist circuits and revival of regional air connectivity will further help revive the footfall of tourists and provide a boost to the tourism industry. The need to support One District One Product (ODOP) concept by creating sufficient infrastructure would be realised by the government’s initiative to encourage states to set up a Unity Mall in their tourist circles. This would help MSMEs and artisans to formally market their products to domestic and foreign tourists in a targeted manner.
Income tax rebates announced in the budget will result in an increase in disposable incomes which will further enhance the tourists. The initiatives taken in the current budget expected to revive the pandemic-affected hospitality and tourism sector and mark a significant step towards a more sustainable future.

Due to the industry still being under stress, it was looking up to the Finance Minister announcing some concessions in the budget. The FM has, to some degree, come up with some measures which are welcome by the hospitality industry. Ashok Malkani examines the concessions that the industry has hailed.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, Hospitality and Travel Industry employs more people than automotive, mining, financial services and manufacturing combined. But hospitality demands its employees to be epitomes of cordiality, friendliness and conviviality, for establishing an amicable relationship between the guests and the hotel. Ashok Malkani takes a look at how the industry, with the help of the employees, establishes a healthy rapport with the guests and the essential aptitude and attitude that the employees must possess.
