Most of us would admit to the occasional light-hearted reference to OCD, even those of us who don’t suffer from it. Movies and TV programmes often feature characters with OCD, but they tend to misrepresent or ridicule the symptoms. But sufferers know it’s no laughing matter.
At some point in your life, you’ll experience worry, doubt or fear – it doesn’t matter who you are. It’s natural to worry about issues such as your health, how you’ll pay your bills or what your future holds. You may even have the occasional intrusive negative thought. But that’s not OCD.
The disorder is characterised by obsessive thoughts, impulses, or images and compulsions that are difficult to suppress and take a considerable amount of time and energy away from living your life, enjoying your family and friends and even doing your job.
It has two main components: obsessions are intense, upsetting thoughts you find difficult to control, and compulsions are the rituals you engage in to relieve the anxiety those thoughts cause.
