MAKE REST YOUR PRIORITY

Let’s put a moratorium on revenge bedtime scrolling, shall we? Sometimes the best way to reset and recentre is to reinvest in sleep. “Sleeping enables your body to repair and be fit for another day. Having rest days and downtime allows muscles to replenish, adapt and become stronger. You cannot improve anything in your body if you don’t give it any time to heal and recover,” says Anisha Joshi, a London-based osteopath. Is working out the number-one item on your resolution list? Joshi suggests prioritising total rest days in between, as gains are made when you rest. It’s the time that your muscles can be repaired and built.

FIND TIME FOR MINDFULNESS

Stop thinking you’re too busy to slow down. “If you have time to check social media a few times a day or watch TV shows during the week, you most definitely have three to five minutes a day to be in your meditation practice,” says Amanda Gilbert, meditation teacher and lecturer of mindfulness at the University of Southern California. “Be okay with starting small. Begin with three to five minutes at the best time of the day for you. Once five minutes feels manageable you can increase your meditation time to longer practices. “Some days your practice is peaceful and easy, other days it’s tough. But no matter what you get when you sit on your cushion, greet it with kindness. The important thing is that you showed up for yourself and that’s enough,” says Laurasia Mattingly, a meditation and mindfulness instructor, author and speaker.
