Death ends a life, not a relationship,” Mitch Albom once wrote. For anyone who has lived through the loss of someone they loved, these words will ring true.
And for Arjan Dugal, the relationship he shared with his late mother, the much loved model and designer Simar Dugal, manifested itself in his undertaking of her eponymous brand. A year after her untimely death, Simar’s son carries her artistry forward, helming the label which brought forward Indian crafts and techniques with a bohemian ease.
“Ma lived life on her own terms,” says 29-year-old Arjan. “Today, in her absence, we are left with a few tangibles of her legacy. For me to keep the name Simar Dugal alive and make it flourish, to create a legacy she couldn’t complete, is my way of paying her back for being the best humanity had to offer.”
