Remember the time when you confidently entered into your bedroom, only to forget what you wanted from there a second later? In that moment, you might have understood that human memory is full of surprises and often fails us at the most inconvenient moments.
But why do we really seem to forget things that really matter to us, instead of the hundreds of mundane details which are of no use, ever?
Given the level of forgetfulness we experience every day, it may sound strange that our brains hold an essentially and literally ‘unlimited storage’ for learning! If you still doubt the presented fact, here is what the professor of psychology – Paul Reber – at Northwestern University, had to say about it:
“Our brain can store almost 2.5 PETABYTES of data i.e. 2500000 Gigabytes or make it easy, 300 years of watching TV” But the question still remains the same; why do we still forget so many things?
Let’s suppose you have a computer – a vast database of information at your fingertips - which you have been using for years. So, how did you manage to use it for so many years with an even improved performance?
Well, you upgraded it with the use of latest software, didn’t you? And you keep a check for any possible improvements too! The same is the case with our memory! You cannot expect your memory to work on its own, (it may, but not up to your expectations) without putting it to use or improving its performance through various brain exercises or games.
A frequently given advice: Doing crossword puzzles daily or even Sudoku, keeps your memory sharp! You don’t believe in this advice? You must start believing it now!
