We live in a culture where numbing is a sign of strength and living through pain is for weaklings. We have all succumbed to the numbing by drugging away our pain, whether physical or psychological. And, we demand others around us to do the same. I have been told on multiple occasions by friends and family to pop a painkiller and push through to avoid disrupting my personal and professional plans. I have done the same to people around me also.
I had a major shift towards living through pain after experiencing side effects from a very popular non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, Ibuprofen. It caused severe upset stomach which essentially resulted in painkiller being out of my system within minutes of taking it. So I was left with side effects on top of the original pain and no other option besides toughing it out. This experience forced to me to see that the real courage is to be present with the pain, and not numbing it with drugs. It was liberating to see myself come out of it stronger.
