Searching for SNOWDROPS

Raising spotless whiteheads on vibrant green stems above the frozen ground, snowdrops are an enduring sign that spring will return. Spectacular displays of these small but mighty plants can be seen in Herts and neighbouring counties. Turn plant hunter and go exploring this winter.

Benington Lordship Benington nr Stevenage, SG2 7BS beningtonlordship.co.uk

See a spectacular display of naturalised snowdrops around the remains of the Norman keep and surrounding moat. Hellebores, aconites, and winter flowering shrubs are also in flower, adding winter colour. The snowdrop walk runs along the wall at the top of the moat and, over the years, a collection of rare and unusual snowdrops has developed, with many growing in the borders. Open February 5-March 1, 11 am-4 pm daily. Adults £5 (£6 on Sundays), children under 16 £2, under-fives free. Free parking. Refreshments in the tea room Monday-Saturday and Sundays in the parish church. Concerts in St Peter’s every Sunday at 2.30 pm during the snowdrop openings.
