Use the elements to your advantage and discover how subject choice, camera settings and the right conditions can come together to create dynamic scenes
Atmospheric landscapes

There are so many different types of landscape photography; while some prefer to shoot scenes as accurately and sharply as possible, others use a range of creative techniques to interpret locations in an abstract way. There are also outdoor photographers who embrace moody, misty, and inclement weather to capture atmospheric scenes that are far more dramatic and mysterious in nature.

Atmosphere is often referred to as a particular feeling in an image, but there are far more tangible ways to get started. Part of getting fantastic images is knowing where and when to go out with a camera – you’ll need to plan a shoot for the chance to see fog, mist, low clouds and even rain. Of course, you’ll also need the right equipment and protective gear to stay dry in such weather. While atmospheric landscapes are often thought of as being dark and moody, even bright and sunny mornings can yield the right conditions if you know how to approach them.

Over the next few pages, we’ll show you how to capture your own atmospheric masterpieces, including where to find the best locations, how to underexpose scenes for dramatic effect and what to look for when checking the weather forecasts. We also talk to pro photographers who share their insight into stunning photography. Ready to take a leap into the amazing world of atmospheric landscape photography?
