CAN THE PLAN

Had Emma’s ex been right – was it time to go with the flow?
CAN THE PLAN

I open the cupboard and take a breath. The boxes are stacked as I’d left them, shoved in with little thought or care, each one filled with memories of our years together. Four years, three months and 17 days to be precise.

I can still remember the look on his face when I’d pointed that out in the middle of his parting speech. The incredulity that I could produce such accuracy at a moment’s notice. I’d felt both superior and humiliated at the same time.

Maybe he’d been right – maybe I had been too obsessive about such things.

‘You need to live in the moment, Emma,’ he’d said. ‘Stop planning so much.’

Well, I hadn’t planned for that moment, that was for sure.

It’s been two months now since he left, or is it nearer three? I smile and congratulate myself on the fact I don’t know. What I do know, is that this cupboard needs clearing out.

Thomas is moving in later today. When I’d first advertised the room, I imagined I’d be sharing the flat with another female. So sure was I, that I’d failed to stipulate that point in the details, or even considered the legalities of doing so.
