Magical Malta

Malta’s capital, Valletta, is set to be crowned European Capital of Culture in 2018. Circled by historic bastions dating from the 16th century, they once provided protection but now are a major draw for millions of tourists who flock here.

For art, history and culture, you can’t beat Valletta. The stunning 16th-century St John’s Co-Cathedral is a sumptuous showcase of Baroque art – all gilt touches, colourful motifs and fine sculpting. Caravaggio’s masterpiece, The Beheading Of Saint John The Baptist, hangs in the Oratory.

For an unsurpassed view across Valletta’s Grand Harbour, head for Upper Barrakka Gardens. Dating from 1661, it was a private garden before opening to the public in 1824.
