Lust for adventure

As I grew older, my longing for adventure grew stronger. I had already explored various places through expeditions like cycling through Mongolia and Tibet during the winter, whitewater adventures on remote rivers in Nepal, and numerous sea kayaking trips to distant areas like Madagascar and the Lofoten Islands. Yet, a restlessness persisted that pushed me to embark on shorter journeys, not only for personal fulfilment, but also as a smart marketing strategy for the brands and products my company represented in the Swedish Outdoor market. Plus this way, I could test them in authentic environments.

This expedition wouldn't be my maiden crossing of the Åland Sea by paddle though. A previous sea kayaking trip to Helsinki had shown me what it is like to navigate across open water. The memory of losing sight of land, and the fatigue when land was finally reached, will be forever etched into my mind.

The idea

It wasn't long after that trip that we started promoting Red Paddle Co and stand-up paddleboarding - which is now some fifteen years ago. It was during this time that the idea of crossing to Turku on a SUP was born. Simply paddling to Mariehamn on the main island of Åland and taking the ferry back didn't feel satisfying enough. I decided to paddle a bit further to have a beer with my Canadian friend, Roni, in Turku, Finland. The journey also promised thousands of islands to explore while camping along the way. I slowly began planning the trip two years ago. I waited for the right weather conditions and a gap in my schedule, beyond work and other commitments. 2023 proved to be challenging in terms of weather, but I spotted an opening and quickly gathered the last essentials when the opportunity arose.

Infection rates, mortality rates and prognostic data are changing daily at the moment. As a new virus none of us have previously been exposed to it, meaning that currently, we have no immunity to it. It’s only through being infected by a virus that our bodies are able to make the right antibodies to not only enable us to recover but to also help protect us from any recurrent and future infection from it. If you’re keen to stay well and keep getting out on your SUP board this spring, then focussing on boosting your immune system is a positive step to take.
