Recipes for "Banana Smoothie" and "Pineapple Smoothie" first appeared in the 1940s. Smoothie was popularized in the 60s and became mainstream in the 1990s.
In India, "Lassi", has been popular over the ages. It has been recognized as the ancient smoothie. So, is "Lassi" termed as a "Smoothie" in the Western world? No. There is a difference. In "Lassi" yogurt plays the leading role but in a "Smoothie" fruit plays the leading role.
Smoothies have become extremely popular in India. The smoothie's market, in the country, according to Grand View Research, generated a revenue of $ 256.3 million in 2023 and is expected to reach $ 627.5 million by 2030.
What, one may ask, is a smoothie and how popular is it in India?
Pratap Chaudhary, Executive Sous Chet The Mirador Hotel, Mumbai, explains, "A smoothie is a beverage made by puréeing ingredients in a blender. A smoothie commonly has a liquid base, such as fruit juice or milk, yogurt or ice cream. Other ingredients may be added, including fruits, vegetables, non-dairy milk, crushed ice, whey powder or nutritional supplements."
He adds, "Smoothies are popular because they are a convenient way to consume fruits and vegetables, and they come in many flavours and ingredients. They are also a good option for those who are health-conscious, have dietary restrictions, or are interested in fitness."
