Gallstones are small, pebble-like structures that form in the gallbladder, a small organ situated beneath the liver. These stones are composed primarily of hardened bile substances, such as cholesterol or bilirubin, and can vary in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball. While some people with gallstones may never experience symptoms, others can develop painful and even serious complications.
• What Causes Gallstones?
Gallstones form when the substances in bile, a fluid produced by the liver to aid digestion, become imbalanced. The following are the primary factors that can lead to gallstone formation:
• Excess Cholesterol in Bile: The liver secretes cholesterol into bile, which usually dissolves. However, if the liver produces too much cholesterol and the bile cannot dissolve it all, the excess cholesterol can crystallize and form stones.
• Excess Bilirubin: Certain conditions, such as liver cirrhosis, biliary tract infections, or certain blood disorders, can increase bilirubin levels, leading to stone formation.
Inadequate Bile Salt Production: Bile salts help dissolve cholesterol in bile. Low bile salt production can lead to cholesterol precipitation stone formation and Gallbladder Motility Problems: When the gallbladder does not empty efficiently or completely, bile may become overly concentrated, promoting gallstone development.
• Risk Factors: Age: Gallstones are more common in people over 40.
• Gender: Women are at a higher risk, especially those on hormone therapy or birth control pills. Obesity and Sedentary Lifestyle: Higher body weight increases cholesterol levels in bile, which can promote gallstone formation.
• Pregnancy: Hormonal changes can slow down bile emptying from the gallbladder, increasing the risk.
