The decision to transform their home into a retreat came after the owners returned from a holiday in Indonesia. "They'd had a private pool and an indoor-outdoor experience they really enjoyed, which was a high priority in their new home," explains David Gockel of Gockel Architects. "They were very openminded about what needed to be included in the house and were not wed to designing a home that conformed to social norms."
