DICKSON LIM, a moniker in the local fashion scene that, most of the time, is associated with him debuting at the young age of 19. But to me, that is perhaps the last wow factor the designer has under his sleeves.
When I first heard about Dickson, and his eponymous label, DICKSON LIM, I was far away from home, miles away in London, in a conversation that evolved into a discussion regarding the future of menswear. "Suit up" is a style in menswear that withstood the test of time, but inevitably, it became a synonym of being conservative and monotonous.
But Dickson however, had people talking about wearing suits again, only this time, it's more fun and appealing, they were deconstructed. His designs proceed to garner worldwide recognition when reality personality Bretman Rock was seen, well, rocking a DL piece.
How did Dickson Lim first start?
Unlike many fashion designers, I didn't go to fashion school. I never even envisioned myself owning a fashion brand either. I started off designing for myself because I wanted to wear something that allows me to stand out from the crowd, something that is not widely available in the market yet. DICKSON LIM was born with the intention in mind.
How would you describe the brand?
I would describe my style as futuristic, minimal, sleek tailoring with an unconventional twist and DICKSON LIM (DL) is about breaking the status quo in tailoring & transcending the customary fashion industry.
The internal philosophy of DL is aspirational. As a young designer who started at 19, I hope I can inspire all young creatives, designers, and artists out there to gather all their courage, to 'Dream it. Believe it. Achieve it. Be so good that nobody can ignore the impact you are bringing to the industry.
