JOE Biden has granted his son a presidential pardon, sparking anger among Democrats and Republicans over the U-turn.
Last month, an aide for the outgoing president said he would not pardon Hunter Biden, 54, who was facing possible jail time.
But in a shock statement Biden said his son was singled out in a miscarriage of justice.
He added: "From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department's decision making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted." Colorado's Democrat Governor Jared Polis said the pardon will tarnish Biden's legacy, adding "the bad precedent could be abused by later presidents".
He added: "While as a father I certainly understand President Joe Biden's natural desire to help his son by pardoning him, I am disappointed that he put his family ahead of the country." Donald Trump's campaign team accused Biden of dishonesty.
