Blender's own render engine, Eevee, enables us to experiment with and handle new types of projects in an innovative way. I used it to make a short film named Spectral to great effect. In this breakdown, we'll analyse the basic steps for making a short film, from the initial phase right the way up to the post-production.
01 THE CONCEPT
Spectral shows a future reality where humankind as we know it doesn’t exist anymore. What remains is the eponymous spectre, outclassed by an outof-control technological growth. The storytelling structure was developed from initial draft sketches and keywords. From this starting point, the rest of the world of Spectral is defined.
02 SET UP THE SCENARIO
Once the theme and style have been set in stone, a graphic section of the camera path is created to get an idea of the overall scale of the scene, and to help decide how to further divide up the shots. After compiling an initial plan, the film was divided into six main scenes, enabling a clearer assessment of the assets required to complete the project.
03 BLOCK THE STRUCTURE
After finalising the structure, the scene blocking was created. This step will, later on, help to define the camera layout, and is also important because the overall spaces, as well as the action areas, are defined here. This step will help to limit the risk of any errors in the following steps.
