It was astonishing that the Duke of Sussex was even asked, and even more surprising that he answered.
Harry, 40, was on stage at a recent conference organised by The New York Times, when the host, Andrew Ross Sorkin from the newspaper, asked him whether his six-year marriage to Meghan, Duchess of Sussex was on the rocks.
After a slew of solo appearances from each of them, including Meghan on the red carpet in Los Angeles while Harry was speaking in New York, and increasingly separate work agendas, divorce rumours have sky-rocketed.
Being trolled
Harry laughed while saying it was ‘hard to keep up with’ the allegations on social media. ‘Apparently we’ve bought or moved house maybe 10, 12 times. We’ve apparently divorced maybe 10, 12 times as well. So it’s just like, what?!’ joked the prince. ‘It’s hard to keep up with, but that’s why you just sort of ignore it,’ he continued. ‘The people I feel most sorry about are the trolls. Their hopes are just built and built, and it’s like “Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes” and then it doesn’t happen. So I feel sorry for them. Genuinely, I do.’
OK Harry, if you say so… Yet the problem for Harry (and indeed Meghan) is that if you’re going to invade others’ privacy and throw shade on their family life (on primetime TV no less), then you will be asked about your own.
It’s easy to forget that he appeared to make what some interpreted as a subtle dig at his own brother’s family affairs in his 2023 autobiography Spare, which was so beyond the pale it surely enraged William.
