MINIVANS AND BEST-LAID PLANS
MODERN MINIVANS OFFER MANY OF THE AMENITIES FOUND IN HIGH-END LUXURY CARS. WE PLANNED A TOP-SHELF OUTING TO PROVE IT, BUT THEN THINGS WENT AWRY.
TWENTY-FIVE CARS WORTH WAITING FOR
Here at Car and Driver, we like to think we know what’s coming down the pike carwise (everything else is a mystery). Sometimes our intel is so unbelievable we’re certain the info passed to us was generated to flush out an industry mole. For example, a reliable and still trusted source told us Nissan had a Murano convertible in the works years before it debuted, but we couldn’t bring ourselves to print such far-fetched nonsense. We are confident that the following 25 cars will arrive in the next few years. Of course, production plans may change, but our past batting average is Hall of Fame worthy. Many of the cars on this list are electric, but not all rely on batteries. Many of the cars we deem worth waiting for still burn gasoline. So don’t fret about EVs too much yet—a mix of powertrains will continue far into the next decade.
Goes Fast, Saves Gas, Bring Cash
Highs: Undeniably luxurious, the quickest new Grand Cherokee, a plug-in hybrid that can tow ORVs is our kind of contradiction. Lows: Uncertain handoff between gas and electric at low speeds, test-car issues, an expensive way to save gas.
Racing for the Podium but Falling Short of a Win
Highs: Looks tough but pretty, howls like a wolf pack, firmed-up ride. Lows: Scraping the front splitter, outdated infotainment, lacks daily-driver convenience.
Too Much of a Good Thing
Highs: Crushing top-end acceleration, awesome on the track, grip for days. Lows: Intolerable seats, tiresome on-road ride, steering has mind of its own.
Playing Catch-Up
Highs: Sharp new duds, quicker than before, tows up to 6000 pounds. Lows: Tight third row, firm ride on 20-inch wheels, not far enough removed from its Nissan counterpart.
Breaking the Minivan Mold
With newfound refinement and off-road chops, the redesigned Pilot buries its minivan roots and becomes a more desirable mid-size SUV.
Drawing Lines in the Sand
Even more than its far-distant cousin the VW Beetle, the Porsche 911 makes one helluva dune buggy.

Quiet Riot
Part electric and part V-8, the 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray's powertrain may have a split petsonallty, but this car is all about performance.
2000-09 What to Buy: Honda S2000
Overseen by Honda chief engineer Shigeru Uehara (the father of the original Acura NSX and the Integra Type R, two cars that embodied Japanese performance in the '90s), the Honda S2000 is a two-seat roadster we described as "the car of your dreams."
Maturity Is Overrated
Highs: Quicker to 60 mph than the manual, active safety tech included, lots of drive modes. Lows: Carries extra pounds, a CVT just isn’t as fun as a stick, luxury price without all the luxury niceties.
EV, Straight Up
Highs: 253-mile EPA range, practical interior, free of silly EV gimmicks. Lows: All work and no gimmicks makes it a dull boy, not so lively off the line, Chevy Bolt EUV costs less.
AN ODD CHOICE TO COMMEMORATE 50 YEARS OF M
If you had a performance division with 50 years of glorious history, would you celebrate it by introducing a plug-in-hybrid SUV?
Seamlessly Electric
The i7 smoothly integrates an EV powertrain into the new 7-series megasedan.
THE REBELLION ADVANCES
For over a decade, the Power Wagon has served as Ram's burly off-road king. But it doesn't offer Cummins power, and customers clamored for a stonking diesel off-roader with more towing capacity.
Getting Warmer
A prototype drive of the high-performance Integra suggests it could be a nice foil for the raucous Civic Type R.
Track Tractor
An SUV for the track sounds as ridiculous as a supercar optimized for off-roading. And yet, Lamborghini says that around a typical racetrack, its new Urus Performante is quicker than the original 2015 Huracán.
E-tron and On
Highs: Conventionally handsome exterior, upscale and userfriendly interior, largely free of EV weirdness. Lows: Mechanically identical to its Volkswagen sibling, ho-hum highway range, not as speedy as some rivals.
2023 FORD F-150 RAPTOR R: Trucks of Fury
Highs: 700 horsepower, monster-truck presence, surprisingly graceful on-road manners. Lows: Not 703 horsepower, can't lock the rear diff in two-wheel drive, it costs how much?
