Singapore Idol alum DAPHNE KHOO battled ovarian cancer four years ago, and now forks out $1,400 a year for “rent for [her] unborn children”.
The Moneymaker:
Daphne Khoo, 29. The singer songwriter is now an Australian citizen and Singapore PR (“Singapore doesn’t allow for dual citizenship after the age of 21. I was studying in Australia and it’d have been very expensive if I had taken up Singapore citizenship,” she explains). After graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2013, she worked in New York as a musician. In 2015, she moved back to Singapore and is currently based here. Last year, her composition ‘Greatest’ was picked as one of the theme songs for the SEA Games here. She recently released her single ‘First Five Minutes’.
HOME IS: A Holland Village condo where she lives with her parents and elder sister.
HER RIDE IS: The occasional Uber or Grab, but mostly buses. “No one has come and said ‘hi’ to me on the bus — not in the past two years,” she says.
IN HER WALLET: She keeps two wallets ’cos “I don’t want chance losing everything if I [had only] one wallet and lost it.” Her Furla purse holds her EZ-link card, a debit card, a credit card, her ID, driver’s license, and Boost and Starbucks membership cards, while a Donbook wallet holds everything else, including $30 cash and Polaroids of her family.
8 DAYS: You were recently involved in Pokka’s fund-raising campaign for cancer awareness. How did you cope financially when you battled with ovarian cancer four years ago?
