Kalettes

What is a Kalette?

A Kalette, as you may have guessed, is a cross between Kale… and Brussel Sprouts. Kalettes are Brussels sprout-like plants with a tall stem and rosettes forming all the way up to a frilly-leaved top. Cute and petite, this amazing vegetable looks like a tiny purple and green cabbage with green frilly leaves and streaks of purple. It’s not genetically modified, just traditionally hybridized.

We couldn’t quite believe it when we came across this hybridization from members of the ‘Brassica’ family, which includes all of our favourite British vegetables, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli. Those who aren’t overkeen on the ‘Christmas’ vegetable, should not be put off however, as the complex sprout taste is mellowed and enjoys the sweet nuttiness of Kale! It’s milder and sweeter than a Brussel sprout and therefore far more appealing for children and adults alike.
