These tough little battlers defied the odds
As Kristy Spencer lounged on the couch, she felt a familiar wave of nausea. But as she clutched her baby bump, she didn’t care – morning sickness was a small price to pay for what was growing inside of her.
Over 12 months Kristy had devastatingly miscarried three times, so when she and her husband Brett discovered she was pregnant they were thrilled.
But at their first scan they were in for a shock. “When the sonographer said we were having twins, we were dumbstruck,” she says.
At their 12-week scan, they shared the news with their family and friends. It was then they learned there was a 20 per cent weight difference between the two babies. They were referred to a specialist who explained that one twin had growth restriction and was significantly smaller than the other.
“She only had a 50-50 chance of making it,” Kristy explains.
