The field of yoga therapy has been seeing a big growth spurt. With the increasing popularity of yoga, the mounting scientific evidence for the therapeutic benefits of yoga practice, people are now opting for yoga therapy to combat physical and mental disorders and bring about a holistic healing. Fharzana Siraj, founder of Orange Ray is one such healer who has been using Yoga as a therapy to bring about Holistic Healing in patients.
Yoga therapy is a type of therapy that uses yoga postures, breathing exercises, meditation, and guided imagery to improve mental and physical health. The holistic focus of yoga therapy encourages the integration of mind, body, and spirit. Holistic healing looks beyond a person’s physical state and sees the holistic view of their state of being or functioning. It acknowledges that the root cause of a physical illness may in fact be non-physical. Holistic healing works when we approach life from all aspects of being – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.
WHAT IS YOGA THERAPY OR YOGA CHIKITSA?
“Yoga Chikitsa is the application of Yoga as a therapy”, says Fharzana. Yoga’s philosophy views the body and bodily processes different from typical western concepts of anatomy and physiology.
In Yoga, the body is considered a network of energy channels where energy is concentrated or centered in specific zones called “Chakras”. Yoga Chikitsa or Yoga Therapy aims at streamlining the flow of energy throughout the body for health and healing. This involves a combination of both yogic exercises as well as breathing exercises. It emphasizes the flow of energy and substance through networks, channels, and pathways where the body and mind are two components of a whole being. To bring about a lasting healing, the mind-body connection has to be positively re-established. Yoga therapy is used in conjunction with many treatments to enhance the speed of healing and add value to the results. A yoga therapist has to have a comprehensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology and diseases.
