Poor awareness and pervasive misconceptions make cardiovascular disease the stealthy, silent number 1 killer of women and men in Singapore. Yet, you may still have the last laugh if you know how to keep things in working order when hearts are attacking.
Everyday, 15 people die from cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke) in Singapore. In 2014 alone, heart disease and stroke was the leading cause of death among Singaporean women, responsible for taking the lives of 2,572 females.
Despite the alarming statistics, the risks of cardiovascular disease, especially among local women, go very much unnoticed.
More recently this year, a survey by the Singapore Heart Foundation’s Go Red For Women campaign revealed that 17 percent of women believe breast cancer to be of greater threat to them, despite it claiming fewer lives in four years than cardiovascular disease does in a one.
Only 10 percent of the 1,000 women surveyed were aware that heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death in Singaporean women.
The survey also revealed that 51 percent of women aged 21 to 34 years old mistakenly believe they are not at risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular issues. Given that most local women are well-informed and educated, this lack of awareness is unsettling – there is no reason to remain ignorant of the risks of cardiovascular disease and heart attacks among us.

We often see on TV when a person suffers a heart attack, he clutches his chest and collapses rapidly to the floor. However, in reality, most heart attacks start slowly with mild pain or discomfort.
Below are some of the subtle signs of a heart attack:
