A healthy smile is an asset that begins with a line and ends in a curve, cupping all the goodness of life in its wake. Especially when it comes to wellbeing, your oral health cannot be ignored. Rashmi Ullas tells you why a quality smile matters so much.
Maintaining good oral health is not only about boosting self-esteem and confidence, it’s also about owning a healthy body. The mouth serves as a mirror to the rest of the body, reflecting general health and wellbeing. Poor oral health can therefore reveal evidence for diabetes, heart disease, bulimia, and respiratory ailments among other maladies.
Mouth Matters
Your mouth is a whole world in itself. It harbours a diverse and complex microbial community that is more than the people of this earth combined! These bacteria eat, multiply, and produce waste products inside the mouth. Some bacteria can be neutral or helpful, producing toxins that prohibit the bad ones from releasing enzymes and toxins that can cause problems, while others have properties that make them very resilient. 2
What’s important to know is that oral bacteria do not just randomly colonise in your mouth; their numbers depend on your diet, immunity, amount of saliva, and oral hygiene too.
Good bacteria thrive when they have a good environment to support their growth. They can also outnumber the bad bacteria and keep them in check. Normally, the body’s natural defenses keep these bacteria under control. However, without proper oral hygiene, such as brushing at least two times a day and limiting sugar containing drinks, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections and other more serious diseases.
