BRENTFORD are in no hurry to activate their one-year option on hattrick hero Jota’s contract, according to head coach Dean Smith.
The Spaniard, who returned from a loan spell with Eibar in January, scored his first senior treble, taking his tally to six goals in seven games, and inspired the Bees to a fine victory over Championship basement boys Rotherham.
The Millers twice equalised, first through Aymen Belaid in the 67th minute and a fine Anthony Forde strike with three minutes left, after Nico Yennaris had put Brentford 2-1 up.
But Jota scored a penalty in the second minute of added time and completed his hattrick after Lewis Price spilt Sergi Canos’s shot in the dying seconds, and Smith believes Brentford hold the cards in regards to Jota’s future.
He said: “We have an option of extending his contract at the end of the season but there is no hurry regarding that because the contract option is in the club’s favour.
